Description

Bill is a model from the Detroit area that came here to Kalamazoo to work with me for a day--we shot at Western Michigan University, in an older area of the campus that was a little run-down and pretty much unused. I had just gotten a Bronica camera, and this particular Bronica was a pretty good copy of a Hasselblad (which I can't afford). It was (and is) a chance to work with a square image area, which I just love--and I was so infatuated with it at the time of this photo. As many of you know, you get really stuck on the rectangular format of the 35mm camera and all of your artwork has a "same-y" kind of composition. The second that you use a different format, you are free to make new compositional choices--I kept slanting things so that the lines in the photograph give tension or 'movement' to the square. It is my desire to go back to the SX-70 Polaroid camera for a while--another square--and work on some of my compositional habits!

It's nice to hear your perspectives on camera formats. I've gone back and forth between the squares of my Hasselblad and the rectangular formats of my 35 mm cameras for 30 years now. Both have their allure but something about the square format does open up and change the way we see everything. If I were forced to choose I'd go with square since it can always be cropped to whatever we want in post work. It's great to see you working so much with film - your imagery certainly reflects its beauty.
